Chapter 40 Summary

Content Warning: This section of the guide includes discussion of death and sexual content.

Sera journeys through the void of death, a quiet and formless darkness. At first, detached from her identity and humanity, she drifts aimlessly until the distant voice of her old nursemaid, Odetta, calls her back. With Odetta’s guidance, Sera becomes aware of her existence, and a pinprick of light illuminates the void, unraveling the mysteries of her existence and the Ancients who came before. She sees how the Ancients, born of fallen stars, created the Primals and mortals and also how their unchecked power could destroy everything if ever awakened. She also realizes that she is not a part of the cycle of life and death but the cycle itself, embodying the beginning, the middle, and the moment before the end.

Her return to consciousness is one of excruciating pain as the embers ignite into raw, unrestrained power, transforming her body in Nyktos’s arms. The resulting eruption of eather sends a shockwave across all the realms. She physically separates from Nyktos and is suspended in midair inside a shimmering energy.
